Jon Fesmire | November 6, 2020 @ 12:00 AM

Welcome to North Highlands, California, a large suburb of the capital, Sacramento. This comfortable suburb has a population of 49,000 with plenty of parks, restaurants, and coffee shops.

There are also plenty of fun and educational activities in and around the neighborhood. Here are five of our favorites.

Ultimate Terror Scream Park

Ultimate Terror Scream Park in North Highlands is seasonal, but if you enjoy thrills, it’s worth the visit, and it deserved a spot on this list.

This Halloween attraction has three pop-up haunted museums. These are walk-throughs, so you get to enter these terror tours on your own feet. There’s some great attention to atmosphere and detail to make each museum a fun, if horrifying, experience. For 2020, the walkthroughs are Voodoo Bayou, Midnight Asylum, and House of Undead. Physical distancing and face coverings are required, and the attractions will run at 25% capacity.

You’ll want to reserve tickets to make sure to get in. Prices vary by what day you go.

Scandia Fun Center

Scandia Fun Center is a good place to spend from a few hours to an entire day with family and friends. This is a small amusement park, but there’s still plenty to do.

It includes a roller coaster, bumper boats, a raceway, a long slide, miniature golf, an arcade with 150 games, batting cages, a snack bar, and several carnival rides. Scandia takes reservations for parties and group events and opens at 10:00 every morning.

Powerhouse Science Center

The Powerhouse Science Center is also known as the Museum of Science and Curiosity, and for good reason. In a typical year, the center has science camps and classes for kids, various exhibits to explore, and even hosts parties. Exhibits cover topics like fossils, geology, astronomy, and more. In the Challenger Learning Center, Planetarium shows. In its Challenger Learning Center, the museum puts on shows about space in its planetarium.

During COVID-19, Powerhouse Science Center is closed but is offering live digital learning programs for grades K-8.

California State Railroad Museum

The railroad in the U.S. has a fascinating history, and you can learn all about it in the California State Railway Museum. It was the construction of the railroad, in the 1860s, that connected California with the rest of the country.

In this railroad museum, you can learn about what it was like working on the railroad in the 1860s and 1870s, enjoy displays featuring miniature trains, and see real steam locomotives in the past, used between 1860 to 1944. You can even ride a train on a trip along the Sacramento River.

Miners Ravine Trail

If you want to take a long walk on a cool evening, you have to check out the Miners Ravine Trail. So far we’ve covered educational and purely fun attractions. Here’s your chance to get out and enjoy the natural scenery in the Sacramento area.

This winding trail is great for hiking, biking, and walking. Plus, it’s paved and is at least six feet wide in most areas. The scenery is breathtaking, with lots of trees, grassland, and a creek. Oh, and it’s pet friendly, so put your dog on a leash, grab a housemate, and enjoy this 8.3 mile trail. The website has a map of the entire trail.

We hope you’ll find these activities enjoyable. And, if you are looking for self storage in the area, remember to check the StoreLocal listings.
